New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
