Lando Norris edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the points lead from Piastri by a single point after his victory in Mexico City a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running. Tsunoda slid over the curbs on exit before sliding over the escape zone, and was blessed to get away with just a slight brush of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the main straight. Hamilton finished practice in 19th place, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds off the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
