Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
