Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
